Anthologie noire Gathered by Nancy Cunard, Translated by Geneviève Chevallier, Introduction by Nicolas Menut
Galerie Philippe Ratton presents Nancy Cunard’s Anthology Noire, translated by Geneviève Chevallier.
If the publication in 1934 of the “Negro Anthology” marks a key moment in the history of black consciousness and the fight against racism in the United States and beyond, it had never been translated into French before. The singular intuition of Nancy Cunard, militant editor, poet, and muse of the surrealists, was to document the violence inflicted on blacks while celebrating in the same gesture the cultures inherited from Africa throughout the world. To do this, this unparalleled book multiplies the types of sources (iconography, archives, press articles, testimonies, excerpts from books, photographs, political speeches, tracts, poems or even songs), points of view (America, Africa, Europe) and contributors (historians, anthropologists, activists, artists, poets...).
